'Whispers of Wood and Stone' bonsai exhibition opens in Beijing

The "Whispers of Wood and Stone: Bonsai and Viewing-Stone Art Exhibition" opened at the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture in Beijing on Aug. 10, tracing more than 1,000 years of Chinese bonsai and viewing-stone culture.

The exhibition is jointly hosted by the museum and the Bonsai and Viewing-Stone Art Branch of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture. It combines cultural relics, bonsai, viewing stones and artworks to trace the evolution of the two art forms and explore their cultural significance.

Approaching bonsai and viewing stones from the perspectives of nature, culture and aesthetics, the exhibition examines their historical development and artistic meanings.

Often described as "three-dimensional paintings" and "silent poems," the two forms are a miniature embodiment of traditional Chinese garden art. Both reflect the gardening philosophy of recreating vast landscapes within a confined space and capturing the beauty of forests, springs and mountains on a small scale.

The exhibition extends beyond the conventional indoor gallery, making use of nearly 2,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor areas across the museum. The varied settings bring together works of different types, sizes and textures.

More than 300 exhibits are on display, including cultural relics from the museum's collection and contemporary artworks. The exhibition also explores how the two traditional art forms can be passed down and reinterpreted today.

Alongside the physical exhibits, the exhibition features digital interactive installations. Visitors can explore scenes of a Qing dynasty bonsai market through a digital version of "Suzhou's Golden Age," a 1759 painting by Xu Yang.

Another installation tells the story of the Water-Eroded Rock in the Shape of a Lotus (Qinglian Duo), a celebrated garden stone at the museum. An interactive puzzle lets visitors reassemble "Floral Cycle of Longevity," a painting by Wang Chengpei illustrating Qing dynasty bonsai culture.

Visitors can also put on augmented reality glasses to experience two featured projects, "Mount Jiuhua in a Gourd Bottle" and "The Growing Bonsai Tree." The former draws on the poetic world of Su Shi's poem "Mount Jiuhua in a Gourd Bottle." The latter simulates the full process of selecting, planting and pruning bonsai, teaching visitors about bonsai shaping and care.

Activities for visitors of different ages will run throughout the exhibition, including bonsai-based wellness sessions, children's co-creation workshops and academic exchanges.

The exhibition aims to make traditional culture something visitors can see, touch, play with and appreciate, bringing ancient bonsai and viewing-stone traditions closer to contemporary audiences.
