"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has set box office records in China, North America and worldwide. The IMAX version, available in only a handful of markets including China, has also proven especially popular in the country.

The new Spider-Man movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jacob Batalon, got off to a spectacular start, scoring the highest-grossing debut in Sony Pictures' history and swinging past 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" for the top North American launch of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. The film took a staggering $360 million in the United States and Canada, securing the biggest opening ever in the region and surpassing "Avengers: Endgame" which grossed $357.1 million.

The film achieved a slew of records over the weekend. For example, the movie's $72 million from domestic Thursday previews topped the previous best of $60 million in previews for "Endgame." It also set the record for the top opening Friday domestic sum with $168 million, again surpassing "Endgame," which made $156.7 million.

Globally, it added $572 million from 66 international markets for a worldwide opening total of $932 million. This stands as the second-best global launch, behind only the record-breaking $1.2 billion start for "Avengers: Endgame."

"This weekend's historic worldwide results remind me of what Clarence wrote to George Bailey in 'It's a Wonderful Life': 'Remember, no man is a failure who has friends,'" Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Motion Pictures, said in a statement. "'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that resonates with audiences of all ages and all around the world. In troubled times, Sony is very proud to have united the world in celebrating a film about hope."

Producer Amy Pascal, who put the whole Spider-Man franchise in motion when she was chair of Columbia Pictures, stated: "It's exciting to see such a powerful response to a story that never lost sight of what makes Peter Parker so enduring — his humanity. This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human, and we're thrilled to see that resonate on such a global scale."

"This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen," said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who produced the film. "This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel's characters and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world — and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come."

China led all international markets with 824 million yuan ($122 million), the biggest opening for a Marvel film since "Avengers: Endgame" opened to $175.9 million in 2019. The performance could restore some confidence among Hollywood studios about the potential of the Chinese film market for Marvel movies and Hollywood films in general.

Due to the worldwide dominance of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" on IMAX, most parts of the world did not offer an IMAX version for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," but China did.

IMAX China announced that the new Spider-Man film grossed more than 130 million yuan at the IMAX box office in China, delivering IMAX franchise records for both opening day and opening weekend. The record-setting debut marks IMAX's biggest opening day for a Hollywood release in China since "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, while also establishing a new opening weekend record for a single-character superhero film. Even more remarkably, IMAX accounted for 16% of the film's nationwide opening weekend box office with roughly 1% of total screens, delivering the highest IMAX index ever for the live-action franchise.

The momentum was evident from the start, with IMAX midnight screenings generating more than 8.2 million yuan, representing 30% of the film's nationwide midnight grosses. The strong demand translated into a new 2026 IMAX China midnight-screening record, and achieved the biggest-ever IMAX midnight-screening performance for both the Spider-Man franchise and a single-character superhero film.

"Congratulations to our partners at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios on this phenomenal opening," said Daniel Manwaring, CEO of IMAX China. "This landmark performance once again demonstrates IMAX's unique ability to elevate great storytelling into must-see theatrical events, while underscoring the Chinese market's enduring appetite for event cinema. This powerful opening further fuels our momentum through the rest of the summer season, backed by a strong content pipeline ahead."

As "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continues its run across IMAX theaters nationwide, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," the world's first feature film shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, will open in IMAX theaters across China on Aug. 14. The IMAX summer lineup also includes "Kung Fu Soccer" and "All Wishes Come True!," currently playing in theaters, as well as the upcoming "The End of Oak Street."
